Since Messapian times , Soleto has been of strategic importance thanks to its central  position in the Salentoterritory. In fact, the treasures of that age are gradually being brought to light by archaeolgical excavations.

Its development also continued  into Byzantine age, as can be seen in the Church of Santo Stefano, while during in the medieval period it became the main town  of a county.

The historic centre is characteristic, not only for its courtyard houses , the seat and an old pharmacy, but also for its walls dating from 1300, which  still have two  ancient entrace gates: Porta S. Vito and Porta S. Antonio. Of that period we can admire the wonderful Steeple by Raimondello, while  the Palaces Arcudi, Blanco and Gervasi all date from the 1500s. The Church of Thanks dates, instead,  from the 1600s.
